Drivecam Vehicle Camera System
What a great idea ! You can now submit your 20 seconds of video to those reality shows.
A vehicle camera that records incidents while you drive has been credited with reducing accidents in the US. It is like a black box recorder for your car. A humble Aussie invention called Drivecam has taken the US by storm.
Australian inventor Gary Rayner has already sold 30,000 of his Drivecams in the US. Where installed, they were said to have reduced accidents by recording the anatomy of a car crash for later analysis.
The DriveCam system features a palm-sized, front facing video camera that attaches to the windshield directly behind the rear-view mirror to avoid intrusion into the chauffeur’s field of vision. When triggered by unsafe driving, DriveCam automatically records everything the chauffeur sees and hears in the 20 seconds before, during, & after the “event”. Events are stored in the unit’s digital memory, along with the level of G-forces on the vehicle.
“It records onto a simple CompactFlash card which just mounts into the bottom of the camera,” Mr Rayner said. “So if I’m driving and If I need to brake suddenly for any reason, it’s actually triggered the camera.”
“Where it’s been tried, there’s been a 30 per cent reduction in deaths, a 30 per cent reduction in accidents and a 30 per cent reduction in hospitalization,” Mr Gibson said.
Gary Rayner was forced to start selling Drivecam in the US first, but hoped to introduce it into Australia soon.
It sells for about $1500 in the US and has already been picked up by 400 US companies which download from the cameras to tell how their drivers are performing.
