Your readers may not be aware that it is eminently possible (though not encouraged) to file for patent protection on inventions that have been disclosed to the public or offered for sale. Specifically, under United States Patent Law there is a 12-month grace period whereby inventors can disclose their invention to the public and/or offer their invention for sale and still file for US patent protection. For example, if inventor A disclosed his invention at a trade fair on October 5, 2004, inventor A would have until October 5, 2005 to file for patent protection in the USA. While this rule applies in the USA it does not apply in non-USA countries, for example, in the UK a public disclosure ahead of filing for patent protection can have very harmful consequences, but you can still file in the USA providing you are still within the 12-month grace period.
