Home Heartbeat System

by colbert low on September 22nd, 2005

This is one for the household geeks out there.

Basically HomeHeartBeat is a bunch of wireless sensors that sticks to critical parts of your house which will sound an alert on its thumb key display when something goes wrong. Sounds pretty ingenious as you don’t have to always check out your basement for water leaks every day. It also operates over unlicensed public airwaves.

My favourite sensors are the water and power sensors. With the Home Heartbeat Power Sensor you can now monitor power to just about anything you plug in. It gets pretty frustrating once you get out of the house and then you are wondering if your power guzzling iron is still switched on. So no more guess work with the power sensor in place. If your Home Heartbeat water sensor detects a leak, you could prevent an expensive disaster by adding a water valve shutoff accessory to your system.

The system, which includes a base station, removable display device and wireless sensors, is supposed to monitor parts of a home and alert its owners or take action when problems are detected.

To use Home Heartbeat, homeowners stick sensors throughout their house to keep watch on things like water pipes, garage doors and electrical devices. When a sensor detects flooding, for example, the system can respond by interrupting the main water supply line. It can also alert homeowners if a device is inadvertently left on. Thanks to ZigBee’s low power requirements, the sensors have a battery life of three to five years.
