Treo 700w launched at CES 2006
The launch of the new Treo 700w powered by the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system at the recent Consumer Electronics Show 2006 (CES 2006) on 5 Jan 2006 has got Palm supporters vomiting in their pants. With TREO going to the dark side and adding the ever buggy and virus prone Microsoft Windows Mobile to its line of PDAs ( my ETEN M600 running the Windows Mobile 5.0 hang 3 times this morning) , things aren’t going to look sunny. Its not going to be easy for Windows to live next to an open source product. The sentiments are felt in this article on CNET called “A marriage not made in heaven”. I guess it was more of a financial decision rather than a sentimental one as Treo does need to stay afloat selling something the masses enjoy.
“Customers want speed,” said Lowell McAdam, Verizon Wireless executive vice president and chief operating officer. “Offering BroadbandAccess on the Treo smartphone for the first time satisfies these growing customer needs. By combining Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess service with the flexible and robust Windows Mobile operating system, the Treo 700w smartphone gives mobile professionals and businesses access to their most critical information at lightning speed.”
