Microsoft UMPCs from Samsung, Asus and Founder at CeBit 2006

by colbert low on March 11th, 2006

Engadget sure did a good job and I love it when they post up hot news. They got the chance to grab a few snapshots of the new Microsoft Origamis, and its confirmed that the new Origami is actually running on a Special Edition of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Now you can have an Ultra Portable Blue Screen (Windows error) to show your friends. Just wait till they add in Wireless WAN capabilities like EVDO and HSDPA or integrated GPS modules, then this babies will really take off !

Intel previously stated that the first run of UMPCs will not be commercially available before the second half of this year - 2006 . If the three vendors are able to ship the UMPCs, then this is a clear indication that Intel is well ahead of schedule and is pushing the platform for an accelerated market adoption. The “breakthrough” of the UMPC so far has been targeted for the 2007 and 2008 timeframe.

For the second half of 2006, Intel expects a second wave of UMPCs that will include devices from LGE, Acer and Averatec and run Windows Vista.

As opposed to the Samsung Q1, these devices look and feel solid with the ASUS throwing down a sleek, brushed alluminum case and 1.3-megapixel front mounted cam for WiFi video conferencing. Oh, and the UMPC from Founder also slaps in a 1GHz Pentium M processor compared to the 900MHz Celeron M in the Samsung and ASUS.

The ASUS R2H Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC)

Base specifications provided by Microsoft, to qualify for the UMPC criteria, include running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 OS, having a 7in display (or smaller), with a minimum 800 x 480 resolution, being WiFi- and Bluetooth-enabled, having an integrated touch panel and weighing approximately 2 pounds.

‘The ASUS R2H Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) platform, one of the first UMPCs to come to market, is a result of combining Intel’s low power technology leadership with Asus’ expertise in delivering innovative platform solutions,’ said Mr. Mooly Eden, general manager of Intel’s Mobile Platforms Group. ‘We are excited about working with Asus to enable the first generation of this exciting category - a PC companion that allow users to communicate, access information, be entertained and stay productive on the go.’
