Tascam Vocal Trainer

by colbert low on February 2nd, 2007

The promise: Turn your CDs and MP3s into karaoke music by removing the lead singer’s voice so that you can sing along to it. Think you can out-sing Mariah Carey on “Hero”? These devices promise to help you find out. I’ve been playing around with the professional Tascam Vocal Trainer and the results vary. Voice-canceling technology is hard to pull off consistently. The idea is to reduce certain frequencies in the center of the stereo image — where the vocals are usually recorded. So, success depends on how the song was recorded in the studio, and not all songs are recorded the same way.

For years, professional singers have used CD players such as the Tascam CD-VT1mkII. Like the iKaraoke, these devices try to eliminate the lead singer’s voice on a CD, so you can sing along. The Vocal Trainer lets you slow the tempo or change the key — without affecting the sound too much — to make the song easier to sing.

1 opinion for Tascam Vocal Trainer

I bought this unit and manage to transfer three de-vocalized tunes to my Tascam mixing board before the Vocal Trainer began malfunctioning. I returned it and got another, which is also not working properly.
Is anyone else having problems with this unit?
