Palm – Buck up or back out

Everyone’s talking about the iPhone these days. More than most of us, I am sure the people at Palm dread the mere mention of the smartphone extraordinaire. The question that lingers on top of my head: What happened, Palm? You were the catchphrase upon everyone’s lips when smartphones were a far cry from the days of the annoyingly popular iPhone now. You were the pioneers of handhelds even before Apple could figure out that particular innovation.

To say the hoo-ha over Palm Pilots and Treos are over, is an understatement. Frankly we were disappointed when you let the platform go stale even though everyone else (Microsoft and HTC, Symbian and Nokia, RIM, and Apple) diligently improved theirs.

Here’s where Palm could do with some major revamps:

Hardware
Go slim and sleek. Enough said. And it won’t hurt to make your resolutions higher and brighter now that Windows Mobile 6 supports 320 x 320 display. Add WiFi and storage. 8GB’s the highest we seen on cell phones these days and it’d be great if a Treo can be halfway there, if it’s not too much trouble, Mr. Palm?

Software
Completely overhauling the OS might not be such a bad idea after all, as proven by Apple when they threw their efficient but very dated OS out of the window and replaced it with OS X. And the new software better be good for multitasking, else it won’t be very smart of that smartphone, innit?

Other Stuff
Yes it’s great you’ve got Google Maps pre-loaded but what we’d love to see, is better versions of GMail, Google Calendar, Google Reader and other top-notch nifty stuff.

We look forward to being at the birth of a better Palm!
