Acer laptops preloaded with Ubuntu Linux

by colbert low on January 15th, 2008

Linux lovers rejoice!

New Acer laptops preloaded with Ubuntu Linux are now available, tho’ if you are in the USA or Asia, you’d have to shop around as this site only talks about the N.Zealand online shop and it may run out soon. I’ve seen the specs and you’d probably wanna get about 1GB or 2GB of RAM if you still insist on running Windows (duh) on it. Mind you, that will only make the laptop even slower….Yes, I am pro Linux if you get the drift now.

This is a minimally spec’ed machine indeed, but running Linux it’s fast enough for about everything!

But why only New Zealand, are they better humans to be allowed a real OS?

You can get a cheap Linux laptop to connect to Google services powered by Linux.

Alternatevely you can get an expensive Windows/Apple laptop to connect to Google services powered by Linux. :)

    - Windows is great because it has many funny virus you can’t get with Linux or Mac.
    - Mac is great because you need two monitors, one to work with your laptop and another one to watch the nonsense widgetry invading the desktop that you can’t get with Linux or Windows.

    - Linux is boring since it just work. So I guess it’s better to pay the extra money to get the Windows/Mac stuff.

My local school principal just bought 2 of them for his staff, this to complement all his other laptops that he has converted to Ubuntu, they work out of the box, playing with one now and it really rocks! It is definitely not under-powered, it flys. The principal has by himself converted all but a couple of his schools computers to Ubuntu or Edubuntu over the last couple of years. Windows is free to schools in NZ, so there’s a message in that isn’t there!
